It’s a thing of great Beauty!

Not everyone’s cup of tea, I know, but my Toyota Land Cruiser 76 series arrived today. (Don’t worry haters, it’s not endorsed and fully paid for by me). To say I am over the moon is an understatement.
I spent the afternoon vroom-vrooming with my kids around the neighbourhood. It’s a diesel, 4.2 litre, 16v and it’s got curves as lush as the whole Sports Illustrated bikini crew under one beach umbrella!

I tweeted ages ago about the difference between Land Rover and Land Cruiser and heard the debate rage around my Twitter stream for weeks, but I made my decision and now this beauty has to prove its worth… Can’t wait !

As a rugby, fishing, surfing, travel and general life enthusiast, this was my ultimate and is my favourite car. Believe it or not it’s only the second car I have ever bought, for myself!

I feel lucky to never have had the urge to buy impulsively, but with a third sprog coming, and an increasingly outdoor lifestyle, I have the need for a motor. After great deliberation this is the choice that I have made. I will let you know how it pans out!

What’s your favourite car, and why?

Bob

Good choice Bob! The perfect outdoor vehicle – especially for those fishing trips! And diesel was definitely a good choice!

As tough as it gets Bob! You will enjoy this one. Fyi, I also drive one, but felt a little more grunt was required. So off to Steve’s who fitted a low pressure turbo and inter cooler. The difference is remarkable!! I did the conversion with only 10 000km’s on the clock and has since gone 80 000 trouble free kilometers. And it sounds great too! Nothing like the sound of a spinning turbo at the tailpipe!!

yu – thats the business, will def look into it if I need more grunt but I am a pretty slow paced driver !

agreed. steve’s are the only guys to trust with a turbo job. just check the impact of doing that on your warranty and service plans etc.

Great buy! I grew up in the pick-up version and trust me, they go everywhere you want to take them. Get ready for you Land Rover friends’ comments though. You’ll hear all kinds of Land Rover vs Land Rover comments over the next … well … let’s just say it never stops!

You going to spend some money on fitting extra gear? (Winches, 4×4 shocks, etc)

    Enjoy!

Bob that car is a beast! Great choice, been on 2 trips up to botswana in it and was seriously
Impressed. It could pretty much go anywhere. Also awesome old school look. That would certainlybe one of my dream cars. Happy days ahead and safe travelling.

    Hi Bob,
Well done on you’re buy! The Cruiser is a real classic and tuff as nails…. and in my opinion the best 4x4xfar! :)
    Njoy!
    Cheers
    Chris

      glad you like it !
now to choose the right accessories to catch fish, tour the continent and surf !!

Love it, Bob! It’s ‘the real deal’ when it comes to 4 x 4′s and you have a better chance of finding parts in the middle of nowhere than with a landy or one of those posh SUV’s.

      Hi there Boetman

I am really looking forward to being in the middle of nowhere !!

Bob, great choice! It’s not a coincidence that most 4×4 shows and overland shows like Voetspore use Toyotas for their trek across Africa. (A huge fan of my 3.0D4D too!) Enjoy it Bob!

Congrats on the new car bud. My favourite car is the one I own now. My 2008 Audi S3. Wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. The ride, performance & memories that I’ve had with it are great. It will be very difficult to part with it.

    Great choice, Bob.
We had a Landcruiser and a landrover at the dive charter I worked at in Moz back in ’97. The Landcruiser was the bomb – did it all beach, sea, bush, even towing the Landrover.
Over time the loadbox rusted and was replaced by a wooden one, then the bonnet rusted and was replaced by a fibreglass one. When the roof rusted we just cut it off and created a convertible. But through all its cosmetic changes, it took a lickin’ but kept on tickin’. Great vehicle.

you might want to get an after-market turbo for that puppy.

brilliant car though. i have the same engine in my land cruiser aka punda (swahili for donkey – sluggish but reliable). the ak47 of engines: indestructible.

you need a name for it. i smell a little tweet compo.
