Trout at Nottingham Road – November 2010 (nice hat, plonker)

Tiger on the Zambezi River, Kulefu Lodge - October 2010

Regular readers and friends should know I am nuts about my fishing. Well, it looks like 2011 could see the stars align and get me firing off to some exotic destinations with the Wildfly team to do some angling with rugby greats.  I may also get their take on the upcoming rugby. Isn’t that called heaven for a bloke like me?

What’s the best place you’ve ever fished and what did you catch?

There are a couple of great places I have fished. The Elandspad and Holsloot rivers are a favourite for trout. Wiesenhof is great for bass. For a really awesome weekend adventure for the whole family and for some great trout water, Trout Haven/Dwarsberg is a good option. Check out http://www.trouthaven.co.za.

Campsite 3 is a good choice. Sites are brilliantly maintained, and apart from each other, which gives the feeling of being alone. Site 2 and 3 are about 100 meters apart and 1 is about 1 kilo from 2. 3 has good shade and only a backflip from the ice cold Holsloot river. Take bikes. You can fit 3 families with ease onto the site. Very busy so book well in advance.

sounds great – might rev up the new car and take the delicate rods for a bit – what flies/poppers you using for bass ? am a trout hunter rather, but keen to give both a go

Today I caught on crank baites (articulates) and rubber worm (blue). One bass was landed on a popper, but no luck for me with poppers. Bass are not to fussy thou! Water is warm so fish are lethargic. Guy came out on tube and was using his own patterns, frogs, and caught 3 in succession.

I still want to try giant trevallies on fly, that looks awesome.

The most exciting place that I have fished is Papua New Guinea. I stayed with a South African friend of mine and we fished the inner and outer reefs of Port Moresby for game fish. Managed some nice GT on our first trip but only got one fish on our second!
